Kilbarrack School Completion
Programme Programme Students Mural Garden Favourites Daily Diaries Summer ProgrammeOur Summer Camp is part of the Kilbarrack School Completion Programme, a set of initiatives put in place to positively discriminate in favour of disadvantaged young people. The aim of the SCP is to reduce the number of students who drop out of the education system early. Two schools are involved- Scoil Eoin National School and Greendale Community School.
The 2003 Camp ran for 2 weeks in August. 50 students were involved, ages ranging from 9 to 16. The kids were involved in activities such as acting, web-design, dancing, singing, horticulture, and art. One of the art projects was the mural. It is approx 6ft high and 20 ft long, situated at the back of the school gym. It was designed by Orla Cassidy, a talented 6th Year Greendale student to represent the wonderful Community Spirit in Kilbarrack. The kids are extremely proud of their hard work in painting the mural.
Another aspect of the camp took place on Friday- We had Cool C and Jennifer Branagan, two of Dublins best-known MCs and DJs, coming in to teach the kids how to put beats and rhymes together to make rap songs. Also, JOR (one of Irelands most accomplished graffiti artists) was there to show the students that writing on walls need not involve just scrawling your name, and if done properly can constitute a valid art form. If the students have an outlet for their creative energy, they are less likely to resort to vandalism. ![]() The students had a barbeque on Friday (August 22nd) to celebrate their achievements in the camp.
